Tomas Jirku

Tomas Jirku has quickly established himself on the international electronic music scene. From his humble beginnings of independently released CD-Rs and MP3s on the Notype internet website, Jirku's unrelenting, unpredictable explorations of minimal techno have since been released on prestigious record labels around the world.Jirku first received international attention with his online "Variants" project, with which he exposed his creative process on an Internet website, collecting a series of 59 interrelated compositions. These were then paired down and compiled on a 12 track album on Alien8 Recordings from Montreal, Canada. The opportunity to promote his newly released album at Montreal's Mutek Electronic Music Festival in the summer of 2000 was a catalyst for his creative growth. Performing along side by his musical heroes, Jirku presented newer, even more forward thinking material that impressed everyone in the audience and drew interest from the prolific German record label Force Inc. Force Inc promptly picked up Jirku's new material for his "Sequins" album. The album consisted or experiments in what can best be called 'glitch-funk', wherein Jirku worked with samples culled from his favorite funk tracks, coaxing elements from the source tracks that were left in the back of the mix. With this fresh-minded approach, Jirku allowed the listener to hear what no one has heard before.

Jirku has since released a diverse range of material for other Canadian Record labels, such as his moody tech-house for Jeff Milligan's Toronto based label, Revolver, or his most recent full length release, for Mitchell Akiyama's Intr_version label, which exhibited the dubbier side of Jirku's productions. Interest for Jirku's music has also extended to an international audience and he has produced work that has been released by leading European record labels such as Germany's Klang Elektroik, Traum Schallplatten, Force Inc., and Onitor, as well as Netherland based, Audio.NL which is operated by the well known, experimental audio group, Goem. The diversity and quantity to Jirku's musical output means that no single label is capable of keeping up with his creativity, and the close knit community of electronic music labels that extends beyond borders allows him to expand his musical horizons.

Jirku's live performances always treat the audience to high energy mixes of fresh material from his most recent creative productions as he tests the limits of the dancefloor. Most recently his lively performances have included his experiments with acid-house and sometimes even more agressive moments in techno. Jirku challenges the audiences pain threshold, while never alienating the audience's desire to dance, and the audience screams in enjoyment.
