Klitekture Records showcases in it’s seventh release the work of Catalonia-born Pep Gaya, who has already appeared in Epitome vol. 2 (KLK 004 b), a split EP with Johan Skugge. Epta is an eclectic EP that hosts 4 tracks that can lead to moments of abstraction, and of great expressionism and fluctuating rhythm. The thin line that separates dub from techno is the spot where Pep’s music’s right at. The basics of dub convert to minimal techno of wisely synchronized detailing in his hands. A good example of this is “Dragon Soup”, a track in which vibration is almost touchable, and crystal-clear sounds meet rougher ones, all this surrounded by a mysterious halo. Structural repetition is the perfect basement for a great sonic display in the form of micro-elements. In “Minimal”, the title gets honoured by the application of minimal resources for maximum performance in order to create a more dub-oriented pulse, with a high dose of hypnosis and sea-deep bass. “Pnky“ blurs that techno/dub borderline even more, thanks to the dialogue stablished between an intense rhythmic base, and some persistent notes of industrial flavour. It all results in a very surrounding track and the cyclic nature grants it with a special orbit. LOD’s remix of “Dragon Soup” keeps a fair amount of the original track’s essence, but does have a more stressed and dynamic rhythm. A legion of sound details chat in the magnificent structural rollercoaster of a definitely techno treatment. Pep Gaya’s productions and LOD’s manipulation represent a bridge between the past and the future of electronic music. Epta shows that techno can’t be understood without dub.
